ASSCE sponsored its first panel discussion on the evening of July 31, 2020. Focusing on Chinese Calligraphy, Culture and Language Education, this panel was led by three guest speakers, Dr. Yu Li (李煜) from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Dr. Minru Li (李敏儒) from Ohio State University in Columbus, and Ms. Bonnie Chunmeng Wang (王春梦) from Durham Academy in North Carolina. The three panelists shared their valuable experience and insights in exploring three major topics respectively (1) how to integrate language and culture in undergraduate Chinese Calligraphy classes, (2) how to employ the Performed Culture Approach to teaching Chinese Calligraphy in the U.S., and (3) how to incorporate calligraphy and poetry into the Chinese language curriculum. This event proved highly successful, which was well attended and well-received. The majority of audience indicated that they were deeply inspired by the panelists' innovative pedagogies and benefited from the sample course designs and materials. (Nian Liu)
