Renowned Scholar Prof. Zhou, Bin Delivers Lecture on "The Spirit and Aesthetics of Chinese Calligraphy"

On November 15, 2024, last Friday, the American Society of Shufa Calligraphy Education (ASSCE) hosted an online workshop featuring an enlightening lecture by Prof. Zhou Bin, a distinguished scholar and practitioner in the field of Chinese calligraphy. The lecture, titled "The Spirit and Aesthetics of Chinese Calligraphy", attracted a diverse audience of calligraphy enthusiasts and professionals from across the globe.


Prof. Zhou introduced a unique perspective on calligraphy aesthetics by applying the "Four Temperaments" theory to analyze the temperament of calligraphers and how their personal traits influence the rhythm and flow of their brushwork. This innovative approach provided a fresh lens for understanding the interplay between personality and artistic expression in Chinese calligraphy.


In addition, Prof. Zhou explored the aesthetic appreciation of calligraphy through two dimensions: spiritual and aesthetic. He elaborated on how these dimensions guide the perception and evaluation of calligraphic works, offering participants valuable insights into the deeper layers of calligraphic art.


The audience engaged actively with Prof. Zhou during the interactive Q&A session, delving deeper into topics such as the relationship between temperament and brush rhythm and the methods of cultivating a deeper appreciation for calligraphy. Participants expressed their gratitude for the knowledge shared, describing the session as profoundly enriching and inspiring.


About the Speaker

Prof. Zhou Bin holds a Ph.D. in Literature and has completed postdoctoral research in Calligraphy Studies and Psychology. A member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association since 1990, Prof. Zhou currently serves as a tenured professor and doctoral advisor at the School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is the director of the Institute of International Communication of Chinese Calligraphy Culture, chairman of the "Junior United Nations of Calligraphy" (UNNGO), a council member of the International Confucian Association, a member of the Chinese Ministry of Education's Calligraphy Education Steering Committee, and an executive director of the Shanghai Calligraphers Association.


The ASSCE event underscored the organization’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of Chinese calligraphy as a cultural and artistic treasure. Prof. Zhou’s lecture not only expanded the intellectual horizons of attendees but also bridged cultural and artistic divides, enhancing global appreciation for the nuanced interplay between calligraphy, personality, and aesthetics. Through his insights, the art of Chinese calligraphy continues to inspire and connect audiences across continents.
